RoSPA Advanced Rider Training
Develop Your Motorcycle Riding Skills with Advanced Rider Training
RoSPA Advanced Rider Training is designed for qualified motorcyclists who want to develop their riding skills, improve their understanding of road and traffic hazards, and become more confident, systematic and responsible riders.
At Compass Motorcycle Excellence, our advanced motorcycle training is focused on helping riders develop the knowledge, observation, planning and machine-control skills required for safer and more effective riding on UK roads.
RoSPA advanced riding is based around the principles of the System of Motorcycle Control, as described in Motorcycle Roadcraft – The Police Rider's Handbook. The approach encourages riders to anticipate hazards, gather and use information effectively, select appropriate speed and road position, and make smooth, controlled decisions.
Core Modules of Advanced Rider Training
Observation and Information
Developing effective observation is fundamental to advanced motorcycle riding. Riders learn to identify important information further ahead, recognise developing hazards and continuously update their understanding of the road environment.
Planning and Hazard Awareness
Advanced riders learn to anticipate rather than simply react. Training develops the ability to identify potential hazards, assess risk and plan an appropriate response before a situation becomes critical.
Road Positioning
Correct positioning can improve visibility, stability and safety. Riders develop an understanding of how road position can help them see hazards, be seen by other road users and create appropriate safety margins.
IPSGA System of Motorcycle Control
The Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration (IPSGA) system provides a structured approach to motorcycle control. Riders learn how to apply the system consistently when approaching hazards, bends, junctions and changing traffic conditions.
Cornering, Braking and Acceleration
Advanced training develops smooth and progressive use of the motorcycle's controls. Riders learn how observation, planning, positioning, speed and gear selection work together to achieve controlled and efficient cornering.
Human Factors and Rider Decision-Making
Riding ability is influenced by factors such as concentration, attitude, fatigue, emotions and decision-making. Advanced rider training helps riders recognise how human factors can influence their riding and encourages a more considered approach to risk management.
Benefits of RoSPA Advanced Rider Training
Advanced motorcycle training can help riders:
-
Improve observation and hazard awareness
-
Develop better anticipation and planning
