Riding a motorcycle with a pillion, or passenger, requires additional precautions to ensure safety and comfort for both the rider and the passenger. Proper preparation, communication, and riding technique are essential for a safe and enjoyable ride.

Before starting the journey, ensure the motorcycle is in good condition and capable of handling the extra weight. Adjust the tire pressure, suspension, and mirrors as needed. Equip your pillion with appropriate safety gear, including a well-fitting helmet, jacket, trousers, gloves, and sturdy footwear - ideally the clothing will be purpose-made and include Level 2 body armour.

Communication is key when riding with a pillion. Brief your passenger on basic riding principles, such as holding onto the rider or grab rails, keeping their feet on the footrests at all times, and leaning with the rider during turns. Establish simple hand signals or use an intercom system to maintain communication during the ride.

When riding, take into account the added weight and altered balance. Accelerate, brake, and corner more gently than when riding solo. Allow for longer stopping distances and be mindful of the bike's handling, especially at lower speeds. Smooth and gradual inputs will help keep the ride comfortable and reduce the risk of unsettling the passenger. Always plan for regular breaks, as riding with a pillion can be more physically demanding for both the rider and the passenger. Encourage your pillion to communicate any discomfort or concerns during the ride. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience when riding with a pillion - but if in doubt book a lesson to learn these more advanced riding skills.
